Communication in a War Zone

As professional communicators we must consider our audience as we create every message. But what if your audience lives in a war zone? And every message you send out could either save lives, or get people killed? Karen Terrill, SiOC’s September guest speaker, will answer these important questions. She began teaching crisis communications in 2009 for Homeland Security. She recently toured Israel where she visited sites of terrorist attacks and studied how the right information could keep Israelis alive. Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis credits much of the training he got in Israel with catching the Boston Marathon Bombers. During Karen’s presentation, you will meet the Israeli officer (via video) who trained Chief Davis in the importance of using public information and social media during a crisis.

Although Karen specializes in crisis and risk communications, those of us in PR or marketing- with training and preparation - can respond to a crisis and thereby save lives with information. Yes, Israel is totally different from the U.S., but as professional communicators we can learn from them, and be inspired by them. Karen is a life time member of SIOC.
